Lot's Folly

In Genesis 14:1-16, Lot reaped the consequences of his poor decisions. Earlier, Abram had given his nephew the opportunity to choose which direction he would travel in order to pasture his numerous flocks. Lot chose to live near Sodom, a very wicked city (Genesis 13).

When war erupted in the region, the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah found themselves kidnapped by their enemies, and Lot suffered the same fate as the rest. Abram learned that his nephew had been taken captive and followed the soldiers with 318 of his well-trained mercenaries. Some think of the elderly Abram as a weak old man, but he and his warriors defeated the soldiers and saved Lot!

Instead of learning from the error of his ways, Lot returned to Sodom, where his family eventually would be destroyed and his life would be ruined. May we, through the power of Jesus Christ, recognize the temptations and snares in our lives, and flee far from them instead of repeating them over and over again, because destruction lies in that direction!

Like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who repeats his folly. (Proverbs 26:11)
