No perfectly literal translation from one language to another is possiblebecause of the differences between languages. The most literal "translations"are interlinear Bibles. Various types of translations exist because different translators subscribe to different translations theories:
1) Formally equivalent translations: Preserve the original grammar and syntax while still being understandable in English.
2) Dynamically/Functionally translations: Thought-for-thought translations, rather than word-for-word translations.
3) Paraphrases: Add explanatory words or phrases that do not correspond to anything in the original text.
The ideal translation is one that preserves the original as closely as possible, while at the same time preserving the meaning.
