Psalm 59: A Commentary

Psalm 59: A Mikhtam of David, When Saul Sent Men and They Watched the House in Order to Kill Him (1 Sam. 19:11ff)

In 1 Samuel 19, David escapes from his room with the help of his wife Michal, who put an idol in David's bed and covered it with goats' hair (1 Sam. 19:8-17).

• Since David's enemies have risen against him for no reason, he asks the LORD to deliver him (vv. 1-5).

• Although David's enemies are hunting for him like a pack of wild animals, he knows that God will triumph over them (vv. 6-10). He does not ask for the LORD to kill them, but to preserve their lives so that the people will not forget what God has done to them (vv. 11-13).

• Although David's enemies growl against him like angry dogs (vv. 14-15), David will sing praises to God, who is his stronghold (vv. 16-17).
