A Short Commentary on Psalm 1

Psalm 1: The Righteous and the Wicked Contrasted

• Verses 1-2 demonstrate what godly character is and what it is not. The one who follows God receives multiple blessings because: 1) he does not take the advice of the wicked, 2) he does not live like the wicked, and 3) he does not sit with the scorners. Notice the digression of these three activities. Rather, the godly person delights in the LORD's law, studying it on a habitual basis.

• Verses 3-4 explain the result of godly and wicked character. On the one hand, the godly one is like a tree transplanted by streams of water. As a result, the person becomes: 1) fruitful, 2) stable, and 3) will prosper. In other words, the person will be successful in all that God him or her to do. The leaf that does not wither may be a reference to eternal life.On the other hand, the wicked one is like chaff (v. 4). Chaff has no strength, stability, or root system, but is blown about by every wind.

• Verses 5-6 tell of the end of the wicked and righteous (vv. 5-6). The wicked have no excuse when they stand before God, and hence cannot stand in judgment. God continually knows the way of the righteous, but the wicked will perish, which perhaps is a reference to eternal damnation.
