Are You For Us, Or Against Us?

5:13 Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, "Are you for us or for our adversaries?"
5:14 He said, "No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the LORD." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, "What has my lord to say to his servant?"    5:15 The captain of the LORD'S host said to Joshua, "Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so.
(Joshua 5:13-15)

Sometimes as believers, we get “the cart before the horse” as we say in Missouri. It is possible to be so preoccupied with whether or not God is for us that we miss the point entirely. We should not ask whether God is for us, but whether we are for God!
The way to determine whether or not we are for God is:

1) Be certain that you have rejected your sins and have trusted in Jesus as your resurrected Lord. Without knowing Him, we cannot know God or His will.
2) Read the Bible to determine what God says. If our views differ from the Bible’s message, we must adjust our beliefs accordingly.
3) Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, but make sure it is the Holy Spirit who is doing the leading rather than your own desires or a misunderstanding of Scripture.

When we do these things, they will help us to be certain that we are for God!
